- Alarming numbers of children are victims of poverty in
both economically developed and underdeveloped countries.
One out of every five children in some of the richest countries
of the world is categorized as poor.
- In economically developed countries, 25% of children
are deprived of their right to study. Poor families frequently
permit only one child to go to school, nearly always a male
child. The quality of education is often very low.
- One billion persons today are illiterate; two-thirds
are female and one-sixth are children.
- In Lasallian schools, reading, writing and arithmetic
are as important as faith, respect and tolerance. Only when
the mind, heart and spirit are in harmony are students prepared
to take their place in the world.
- Many children suffer when the slow rate of economic growth
drags down wages, particularly when they are from single-parent
families. These single parents, usually women, are often
young and possess limited work skills. Government assistance
is rarely sufficient or efficacious.
- While poverty affects people of all ethnic groups, it
strikes primarily those of the so-called "minority" groups,
including immigrants and refugees. They are often victims
of blatant racism and xenophobia.
- Your donation is a ground-level investment in social
justice for some of the most disadvantaged people in the
world.
